When Is a Workplace Noise Assessment Needed?
A workplace noise assessment is needed when workers are regularly exposed to loud equipment, machinery or processes, and the level of exposure is uncertain. Measurements can establish how much noise workers receive over a shift, identify high-noise areas and help determine whether engineering controls, work practices or hearing protection are required. How Is Workplace Noise Exposure Measured?
Noise can be measured in different ways depending on the question being asked.
A sound-level meter measures noise at a particular location or from a specific source. A personal noise dosimeter worn by the worker records exposure over time, helping show the total noise dose across a workday.

What Can a Noise Assessment Tell You?
A noise assessment can show which tasks, equipment, or locations contribute most to worker exposure.
That matters because workers rarely spend an entire shift standing beside one machine. You may move between quieter and louder areas, operate several pieces of equipment, or experience short periods of intense noise.
In Ontario, for instance, the occupational exposure limit is 85 dBA averaged over an eight-hour workday. Other jurisdictions can have their own requirements, so results need to be interpreted against the rules that apply to the workplace.
What Happens After Workplace Noise Testing?
If noise exposure is too high, the next step is reducing it.
Controls can include quieter equipment, enclosing or isolating noisy machinery, maintaining equipment, changing work practices or limiting exposure time. Hearing protection can also form part of the control strategy.

Measure the Noise Before You Get Used to It
A loud workplace can start to feel normal surprisingly quickly. That does not mean the exposure is acceptable.
