Supporting the Safety of Airport Operations and the Travelling Public
Changes to Canadian federal health and safety laws in 2000 increased the duties and liabilities of federally regulated employers relating to the safety of third parties granted access to the workplace. In anticipation of the changes, Canada’s largest international airport sought support to develop and manage a contractor safety program. In 2000 CrossSafety was selected through a competitive process as the airport’s first Independent Safety Compliance Consultant for contractor safety. Over the past quarter century CrossSafety won a continuous succession of contracts as the sole service provider in this role. We contributed to the development of the airport’s safety code for construction, implemented and managed a contractor safety program prequalification program, reviewed and ensured adequacy of contractors’ site-specific safety plans for work operations, collaborated with the client’s projects control office on issuance of on-site work permits, and maintained a program of construction site inspections to ensure safe conditions and facilities. We also manage an on-line health and safety personnel training portal and provide regular contractor safety program performance and activity reports.
