What is the history of SkillsCross developing JHSC certification training, and how did your course format influence the way it is delivered today?
Back in the mid-1990s, SkillsCross (formally REA) was the first organization that was not a WSIB-funded safe workplace association, to receive Ministry of Labour approval of a JHSC certification course, and the first to become an approved JHSC training provider. At that time, we introduced an innovative 2-day basic JHSC format, while the competing safe workplace associations were offering courses requiring 1, 2 and 3 weeks of attendance. Our 2-day format set a new standard, and proved to be extremely popular with employers and workers. Our approach was soon copied by the safe workplace associations, and other private providers granted approval by the Ministry of Labour. It also caused the safe workplace associations to abandon their 1, 2 and 3 week course formats and adopt a similar 2-day format.
